Benue state has confirmed six Monkey Pox cases and 31 suspected infections across five Local Government Areas.

Benue Primary health care Executive Secretary, Grace Wende, disclosed this Thursday, during a stakeholders’ meeting on the Monkeypox vaccination rollout.

Speaking through the State Immunisation Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Adega, Wende revealed that the confirmed cases include three in Makurdi, two in Katsina-Ala, one in Gwer East, and one in Guma.

She stated, “These cases were recorded in June and samples were collected and taken to the Laboratory. The results were released in July.”

She also assured that those who had contact with the confirmed cases have been monitored.

“All contacts have been identified, tracked, and followed up for 43 days.

“None of them developed symptoms and they are now scheduled to receive vaccination,” she said.

Wende emphasised that the Monkey pox vaccination campaign will not be statewide, but will instead target high-risk communities.

UNICEF’s Social and Behaviour Change Health Consultant, Victor Olaniyi, while speaking at the event, described Monkey pox as a highly contagious viral disease.

“The vaccine is safe, effective, and free. Two doses are required for full protection,” he said.

Olaniyi urged residents to maintain good hygiene and avoid contact with infected individuals.

The vaccine, approved by the World Health Organization for emergency use, will be administered to people aged 18 and above.
