Veteran talent manager and lawyer, Ayo Shonaiya, has shared the story of how he crossed paths with Don Jazzy and D’banj during their early days in the United Kingdom, recalling the moment he realised D’banj was destined for stardom.

In a recent interview shared on Instagram, Shonaiya was asked about managing Don Jazzy and D’banj. He revealed that he first met Don Jazzy through JJC, who introduced him as a producer at the time. Back then, Jazzy was still widely known by his real name, Michael, and even went by the nickname “Sexy Don Jazzy.”

According to Shonaiya, D’banj was not initially part of the music group but was always present, hyping from the sidelines and waiting for his big break.

“D’banj is very smart. He had a plan when he came in. He recognized who was who in the industry and introduced himself to the right people,” Shonaiya said.

He recalled an Independence Day show in London where Don Jazzy and D’banj sought a chance to perform separately. Though initially given only one slot, D’banj ended up performing “Mobolowowon” to an audience that had never heard the song before.

Shonaiya described how the performance turned into a defining moment: “D’banj stayed on stage with his mouth organ and performed Mobolowowon. Nobody had ever heard the song before, but he had the crowd eating out of his hands. At that point, I knew this was a superstar right there.”

He added that D’banj’s charisma and confidence won over the audience completely. “People were singing along to a song they had never heard before. That was how much he controlled the crowd,” Shonaiya recalled.
