The Magistrate Court sitting in Ikorodu on Tuesday directed that Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) tests be carried out on Liam Aloba, the son of the late Nigerian music star, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, popularly called Mohbad.

Presiding Magistrate Adefisoye Sonuga issued the directive while ruling on an application filed by the singer’s father, Joseph Aloba, who had approached the court seeking to establish paternity.

In the suit, Mohbad’s widow, Omowunmi Cynthia Aloba, was listed as the respondent. The application was brought under Order 8 Rules 1 and 8 of the Family Court of Lagos State (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2012, as well as Order 9 Rules 8 and 9 of the Magistrate Courts (Civil Procedure) Rules, 2009.

Aloba, in his motion, urged the court to mandate the Chief Medical Officer or Chief Pathologist at the Military Hospital, Yaba, where Mohbad’s remains are deposited, to extract tissue, hair, or any other sample from the deceased. He argued that such samples should be used for a DNA comparison with Master Liam, to be conducted in a recognised and accredited hospital either within Lagos or elsewhere, including outside the country, at his own cost.

The applicant maintained that questions surrounding Liam’s paternity remain unresolved. He stressed that clarifying the matter was crucial, given its effect on both the welfare of the child and the maintenance obligations of the respondent.

When the matter was called, Joseph Aloba was represented by Augustine Adegbemi from the law firm of Dr. Wahab Shittu (SAN) & Co., while Kabir Akingbolu appeared on behalf of Omowunmi. The application was moved by the applicant’s counsel, and with no objection raised by the respondent’s lawyer, the magistrate granted the prayers.

In granting the order, the court laid down two conditions:
1. That two DNA tests must be conducted — one in a recognised medical facility in Nigeria and the other in an accredited hospital abroad.
2. That representatives of both parties must be present when samples are taken.

The case was subsequently adjourned until November 11, 2025, for continuation of proceedings.
