The managing director of TVC Entertainment, Morayo Afolabi-Brown, has revealed why he openly supported President Bola Tinubu’s candidacy during the 2023 general elections.

Speaking about the podcast with Chude organized by Chude Jideonwo, Afolabi-Brown explained that his decision was rooted in personal conviction and the long data relationship of his family with Tinubu.

She recalled that when her father, a former president of the Nigerian lawyers association and human rights activist, was critically ill, then governor of the state of Lagos went from the family, helping with medical invoices and providing support.

“My father was president of the Nigerian Lawyers Association, and he was a human rights activist. When he was very sick, the governor at that time, like Wow Bola Tinubu, was standing next to my mother. I mean, I cared about my father.

“He helped with medical invoices. And then things were really difficult for the family. And he was there for us.

“And then my brother returned home. He helped me, he said my brother’s hand in politics. He was someone who was with us,” he said.

Although he recognized the role of Tinubu in his family’s past, he clarified that his professional achievements, including his position on TVC, were based on merit and the president did not give him.

“It was not through him, I got my work on TVC. It had nothing to do with like this.

Afolabi-Brown said that joining the Tinubu 2023 campaign team was a deliberate and personal choice, not a compulsion.

“I received a letter from the female arm of the campaign saying that I have been selected to work.

“Now, he had two options. He says not or support him, because I really supported him. Because he believed in his candidacy.

“So it was my job. And it was my own personal decision. So I said, you know what, I’m going to support him openly. And that’s when I accepted.

When comparing his decision with the public support of Oprah Winfrey to Barack Obama, the personality of the media admitted that he was initially skeptical, but concluded that participating in the campaign was a rare opportunity and a satisfactory experience.

He also addressed concerns about his neutrality as a journalist, saying that perceptions could differ, but maintained that TVC was still one of the most objective stations in the country.

“I mean, I always remember when Oprah raised Obama’s hand when he ran for a position. And I had to return and verify morality.

“Are you sure that it is something you want to make public, that you are supporting this guy? And yes, it was skeptical, no doubt. But there is nothing wrong with a personal vision.

“Then I said, you know what, I’m going to support him openly. And that’s when I accepted. And again, not every day you have the opportunity to work in a campaign. I mean, I was working closely with the media team. And I thought it was a good opportunity. Yes, yes, I took the job. And it really was worth it.”

Reflecting on his 12 years with his point of view, which leaned down in August, Afolabi-Brown expressed proud of the success of the program and its impact on the nigeria media landscape.

“We were 12 years old in May. Honestly, I am proud of where we are 12 years later. I am really proud of the work that the whole team has done to make an incredible show.

“And I love the fact that many more people have replicated the format, which is really great,” he concluded.
