Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (retd.), has warned that the possible release of old US records linked to alleged drug-trafficking investigations involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could affect Nigeria’s international reputation.

Buratai also raised concerns about the possible impact on the 2027 general election.

He made the remarks in a position paper titled “Nigeria First: A Case for Protecting National Sovereignty and Dignity.” The paper was published on his verified Facebook page.

According to Buratai, the issue should not be seen as a matter involving Tinubu alone.

He warned that the release of the records could have wider consequences for Nigeria and it s citizens.

The controversy dates back about 33 years and involves allegations and investigations in the United States.

A US District Court in Washington, DC, has reportedly given Tinubu, the FBI and the US Department of Justice until August 28, 2026, to respond to moves concerning the release of the documents.

He also warned of possible economic consequences.

These could include reduced foreign investment, damage to international business relationships, lower tourism interest and challenges for Nigerians and Nigerian companies operating abroad.

The retired general urged Nigerians to consider the wider national implications of the controversy.

He stressed the need to protect Nigeria’s sovereignty, dignity and international reputation.
