Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has approved the sum of ₦45 million for the Oyo State Agency for the Control of AIDS (OYSACA) to intensify efforts in combating the spread of HIV/AIDS across the state.

Speaking through his deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, at the inauguration of OYSACA Ambassadors held at the agency’s conference room in Agodi, Ibadan, the governor noted that the funds, alongside the recent approval for the purchase of HIV test kits, would significantly boost the agency’s capacity to curb the epidemic.

Governor Makinde, while inaugurating the ambassadors, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to public health and reducing HIV/AIDS prevalence in Oyo State. The newly appointed ambassadors include Chief (Dr.) Saka Balogun, Archbishop Ayo Ladigbolu, Chief (Mrs.) Mutiat Ladoja, Alhaji Rasaq Adeleke, Hon. Wale Saminu, and Hon. Shina Peller.

He explained that the ambassadors were carefully selected to support government efforts in sensitisation, awareness creation, and advocacy against the spread of HIV/AIDS. Congratulating them, Makinde urged the appointees to use their influence and platforms to promote the campaign.

“The inauguration of these ambassadors marks a significant milestone in our collective journey towards a future where HIV/AIDS is no longer a public health threat,” Makinde said.

“As an ambassador, you are not just a representative; you are the champions of change, the voices for those who have been silent, the beacon of hope for those in darkness, and the catalyst in building a more inclusive and compassionate society. Your roles will inspire truth, promote education, and ultimately save lives,” he added.

The governor further commended OYSACA for championing initiatives that foster community participation in the HIV/AIDS response, emphasising that such efforts will help reduce stigma, increase awareness, and ensure greater access to prevention, treatment, and care.

He highlighted that Dr. Gbola Adetunji, the Chairman of OYSACA, was appointed based on his vast experience in healthcare delivery. According to him, the government’s recent approval of HIV test kits and the release of ₦45 million were strategic measures to support the agency and its ambassadors in achieving their mandate.

“As we embark on this journey together, let us work tirelessly to ensure our efforts yield tangible results that will leave no one behind. Let us strive to create an environment where everyone feels empowered to make informed decisions about their health, and where people living with HIV/AIDS are supported and embraced,” Makinde said.

In his remarks, OYSACA Chairman, Dr. Adetunji, applauded the governor’s proactive leadership, stressing that the funds will enhance the agency’s reach to high-risk groups and improve access to life-saving services.

He noted that the inauguration of ambassadors signaled a new chapter in strengthening collaboration between government and influential personalities in tackling HIV/AIDS in Oyo State.

The newly inaugurated ambassadors pledged their commitment to the initiative, promising to leverage their platforms to educate communities, fight discrimination, and support the campaign against the spread of the virus.
