The United Kingdom has updated its travel advisory for Nigeria, warning British citizens against travelling to several northern states and riverine areas in the South due to ongoing security concerns.

The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) cited kidnapping, violent crime, terrorism and intercommunal violence among the major risks facing travellers. It also advised visitors to carefully review the guidance before travelling, noting that no journey can be guaranteed to be completely safe.

The advisory warns against all travel to Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Katsina and Zamfara states.

It also advises against travel to riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River states, particularly areas accessible by boat rather than road.

For the North-East, the FCDO highlighted the risk of retaliatory attacks linked to ongoing military operations in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe. It also warned of a high and increasing threat from Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa, particularly around transport hubs, places of worship and large gatherings.

Bauchi State has also been placed under a category advising against all but essential travel.

The UK government urged its citizens to check the latest security guidance before making travel plans to Nigeria.
