As António Guterres’ tenure as UN Secretary-General nears its end, a growing group of Nigerian diplomats and foreign policy experts is urging President Bola Tinubu to support former President Goodluck Jonathan for the position.

Supporters say Jonathan’s experience in conflict resolution, regional diplomacy and democratic governance across Africa gives him strong credentials for the role.

However, experts warn that Nigeria may need to act quickly, as regional rotation and gender representation are already influencing discussions ahead of the 2027 selection.
