Nigeria’s Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, has dismissed reports that the International Criminal Court (ICC) is investigating Nigeria for crimes against humanity.
Fagbemi said an anonymous petition seeking an ICC investigation into alleged systemic kidnappings in Nigeria was dismissed by the court.
According to him, the ICC’s Pre-Trial Chamber II rejected the petition on September 1, 2026, ruling that it was not properly before the court and lacked a legal basis.
The AGF said the Federal Government was concerned about how the anonymous petition was initially processed.
He stressed that no ICC investigation has been opened against Nigeria and that the country has not been subjected to any adverse finding by the court.
Fagbemi added that Nigeria remains committed to the Rome Statute and international accountability while maintaining that domestic crimes such as kidnapping and banditry fall primarily under Nigeria’s judicial and law-enforcement institutions.
